VWU (9-6, 6-2 ODAC) scored the initial 13 points of the game and kept the Hornets (7-8, 3-5) at a distance the remainder of the night.
The Marlins held the Hornets scoreless for the first nine minutes of the contest. Jordan Sondrol was able to snap the 13-0 run with a free throw. The hosts controlled the game 14-6 after the first.
Shenandoah offense started rolling, scoring 15 points in the second. Ashley Stone drained two 3-pointers but the Hornets trailed by 14 going into halftime.
SU cut the deficit down to nine thanks to a 14-0 run to end the third starting with two Ragan Johnson free throws with 5:06 remaining. The Hornets scored on seven of their eight final possessions of the stanza.
An 11-2 Shenandoah run and a pair of Shannon Kuhn free throws cut the Marlins lead down to four, 56-52, with three minutes remaining in the contest. Virginia Wesleyan closed out the game on a 10-1 thanks to a three-pointer and a 7-of-8 performance from the line.
